Marlene Dumas

                 Marlene Dumas
We've been given this image by Marlene Dumas to discuss in groups and answer questions.

What is drawing your eye?
The blood soaked hands stand out because the heavy, dark colours of blood contrast against the light, pastel colours of the body this represents the contrast of life versus death which is a very strong message throughout the painting.

What do you think of the composition?
The composition is very symmetrical and plain. The dull background (negative space) of pale colours makes the body (positive space) stand out of the composition, this gives the feel of death rising through life.

What does the image make you feel?
This image gives me the feeling of life fighting death, the image looks as though a child has died and is being brought back to life, the transparent feet, the hollowed out black eyes and pale and blue skin tones gives the feeling of deadly ghosts.
